Osgiliath was founded by Isildur and Anárion, after the Downfall of Númenor as the capital of the Southern Kingdom. There their thrones stood side by side, while the brothers held the fortresses of Minas Anor (later Minas Tirith) to the south-west and Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul) to the north-east, guarding the capital.

In the days of its glory, the city featured quays to handle sea-going vessels that came up from the sea, a great stone bridge supporting houses and towers of stone, and the Dome of Stars, which housed the Osgiliath-stone, the greatest of the seven Palantíri.

The beginning of the city's decline came during the Kin-strife, when it was sacked and burned in T.A. 1437 after a siege by the rebel Castamir's forces. The Great Plague of T.A. 1636 led to further depopulation and the capital was moved to the more secure Minas Anor in T.A. 1640. As Gondor endured many military defeats east of the Anduin during the following centuries, especially the fall of Minas Ithil in T.A. 2002, Osgiliath became vulnerable to attack and its population continued to shrink until it was finally abandoned in T.A. 2475 when it was captured temporarily by Uruk-hai. In later years Gondor maintained only a military garrison in the western half of the ruined city.

Only after the War of the Ring the city was rebuilt, although the capital of king Elessar remained in Minas Tirith.

So this illustration shows Osgiliath during its days of glory (before the Kin-strife), with the great bridge and the Dome of Stars. In the background you can see mount Mindolluin and the city of Minas Anor.
