My illustration of the Song of During from The Lord of the Rings, sung by Gimli as the Fellowship spends a night in Moria. In response to Sam's doubtful remark "What did they do it all for? They didn't live in these darksome holes surely?" Gimly replies These are not holes. This is the great realm and city of the Dwarrowdelf. And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as is still remembered in our songs," and then starts to sing. The song itself is one of my favourites in The Lord of the Rings. Perhaps inspired by Sam's own reaction ("I should like to learn it"), I memorised the poem and wanted to make an illustration of it for a long time. This is probably not only the most complex piece of art I have ever made, but also the one that took me the longest to complete. Can you believe I started it in 2016? Back then, I only drew the first panel with Durin looking into Mirrormere (for a drawing challenge prompt "mirroring"), that I also showed on deviantArt here: Durin at Mirrormere, but already on this large sheet of paper with the general three-part layout in mind. Then I put it aside for a few years and returned to it in 2021, when I started drawing the borders and studying the Angerthas runes in preparation for the runic inscriptions, but stopped again and finally returned to it in the spring of 2023, bringing it to 95% completion by the summer and finally finishing it in November, after more than seven years.
