• Turin and Gwindor at Eithel Ivrin.

Gouache on board, approx. 28” wide. Commission from a private collector, and completed in December. Due to his travel agenda, the gentleman only just picked up the painting a week ago, however, so I held off posting.

Here we have the much traumatized and fated Turin, following his tragic accidental slaying of Beleg. His companion Gwindor, himself traumatized by Morgoth, and owing his life to Turin, now returns the black sword Anglachel to him.

This terrible burden of grief and weariness is eased by the crystalline, healing, mineral waters of the Pool of Ivrin, and I gave much thought to the use of light for the waters, and saw the falls in particular as a focal point. Against this place of blessing we see the wilderness beyond, in various guises of light and shadow, in order to underscore the the themes. The look of my background owes a debt to the great August Cappelen of Norway’s landscapes, who for me epitomizes the North.

I had long considered capturing this scene, but underestimated the potential for it, and am proud to add it to my existing art for Turin Turambar
