Narsil, the sword of kings.
Forged in the First age by Telchar himself, the blade is literally thousands of years old by the time Isildur carried it.
What a thing to design.
I reasoned that this metal is in some shape or form imbued with something we could call magic, and that alone made it possible to the blade to stay like a recognisable object through the eons. Or maybe it is made of rare meteoric steel or even an exotic alloy possibly involving mithril?
Speculations all, but one thing is for sure: That blade would not be pristine and shiny even when magic is factored in. So, during my backs-and-forths with my sponsor Mr Libra1010, we agreed a patina of ancient age similar to what one sees in museum pieces of medieval weapons that were well kept but have seen centuries of age nonetheless, would be the way to go.
The Blade was also built with gigantic owners in mind, people that would belong in an NBA game instead of among the human-halflings we are more used to, and would be of an ancient design on top of that.
I decided to base it on the Sword of Jericho, the oldest Iron/Steel sword ever found that I am aware of. The shape is very much the same as period bronze swords, but with a thinner and narrower profile, allowed by the stronger metal. Instead of a fuller the sword has a spine ridge, a thick rod-like square section bar that gives the piece a lot of structural rigidity, a must when building such a large blade that will withstand the forces generated by super-humans basically.
It is also a stab-centred sword, as it would be a cross between a Gladius and a Spatha proportional to it’s original wielders. As men became shorter, the sword needed to be re-purposed to fit the wielder, and by Elendil’s time it was basically a very large side-sword, pretty much the limit of how broad and long a blade can be to be wielded one-handed by a very tall and strong man. By Aragorn’s time I imagine it would be re-fitted as a war-sword, or a bastard sword, much similar to Albion’s Principe sword.
The blade is conservatively decorated with gold damascene dwarven designs on and around the blade’s spine and its base. The hilt is fashioned out of Silver, Ivory and gold, following the sun/moon theme.
The scabbard is black as the colour of Elendil’s arms and works as an enhancing effect when drawing out the glistening blade. The tree designs represent Laurelin and Telperion, being thus in accordance with the sun/moon, gold/silver associations, and maybe the very origin of Elendil's coat of arms. They are opposed as in both sides of the globe (or disk) and they are crowned by a star and crown of the opposite metal, in likeliness to the sun and the moon.
Thank you my dear Libra1010 for the commission and years of support, It was a pleasure to work on this piece.
