  • Location: Hobbiton, The Shire
  • Description: Hobbiton Befouled – as it is seen by Frodo and his friends when they return from the War of the Ring. It was really interesting to imagine and depict all the damage and defilement combined with mean industrialization, destroying the once picturesque village.

  • I painted this illustration as a companion piece of my picture of Hobbiton from 2014, which was in turn based on J. R. R. Tolkien's own illustration.
  • Shout-out to Polish Tolkien scholar Ryszard Derdziński (who has been doing very interesting research on Tolkien's ancestry) for the suggestion to draw this version of Hobbiton.
  • As I mentioned above, it was really interesting to think about various ways how a once-beautiful village could be befouled. But of course, as usually, I wanted to stay true to Tolkien's own words, so I tried to incorporate as many details from the text as I could. You can judge how successful I was in that.
"And looking with dismay up the road towards Bag End they saw a tall chimney of brick in the distance. It was pouring out black smoke into the evening air.
Sam was beside himself. 'I'm going right on, Mr. Frodo!' he cried. 'I'm going to see what's up. I want to find my gaffer.' (...)
But much more detailed description follows later, after the Battle of Bywater has been won and they come to Hobbiton itself:
It was one of the saddest hours in their lives. The great chimney rose up before them; and as they drew near the old village across the Water, through rows of new mean houses along each side of the road, they saw the new mill in all its frowning and dirty ugliness: a great brick building straddling the stream, which it fouled with a steaming and stinking overflow. All along the Bywater Road every tree had been felled.
As they crossed the bridge and looked up the Hill they gasped. Even Sam's vision in the Mirror had not prepared him for what they saw. The Old Grange on the west side had been knocked down, and its place taken by rows of tarred sheds. All the chestnuts were gone. The banks and hedgerows were broken. Great waggons were standing in disorder in a field beaten bare of grass. Bagshot Row was a yawning sand and gravel quarry. Bag End up beyond could not be seen for a clutter of large huts.
'They've cut it down!' cried Sam. 'They've cut down the Party Tree!' He pointed to where the tree had stood under which Bilbo had made his Farewell Speech. It was lying lopped and dead in the field. As if this was the last straw Sam burst into tears."
