• This is one of those titles that just seem to appear spontaneously. The painting is actually a portion of the original illustration for the cover of Robert Foster's book. This detail was also the cover of the 1995 Tolkien Calendar, with a frame added to fit the calendar format.

I've often been asked why Gandalf has a hat, as he is now Gandalf the White. Well, time to go back and read the story a little more carefully... a hat he does indeed have. On the other hand, I really don't care for the depiction of Minas Tirith. If I had the courage to go back, I'd paint over it and make it rather different. Very different.
