Today's piece was brought to you by Mr Libra1010 www.deviantart.com/libra1010 's generosity and support. This illustration was my way of expressing my gratitude.
"Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light of the sun shone redly in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, and its edge was hard and keen. And Aragorn gave it a new name and called it Andúril, Flame of the West."
"Its blade had engraved the designs of Seven Stars between the rayed Sun and the crescent Moon, symbols of Elendil, and his sons Anárion and Isildur. It also had many Cirth. Its blade was notably brilliant, justifying its name. Later, it was given an Elven sheath with a tracery of flowers and leaves wrought of silver and gold and the name Andúril and the lineage of the sword set in elven runes formed of gems."
—J.R.R. Tolkien
When Aragorn walked the wild lands as Strider he carried with him the ancient Narsil, broken in two and very degraded by the countless years it had witnessed. That sword would be a very worn down version of the design I posted previously: www.deviantart.com/artigas/art….
By the time the elves of Rivendell re-forge it, they would also have re-fitted the blade to a modern hilt and re-purposed the weapon into a bastard sword, much more wieldy for a man of Aragorn's stature.
Re-forging a blade is a concept that can be interpreted in many ways. Was the sword repaired with a forge welding technique using a scarf joint and then re-tempered? Or was it molten in a very high temperature Magical/Technological furnace and then re-forged from the ingot? Or was it welded together by an arc of magical lightning or maybe the pieces were simply re-attached together with the use of powerful and advanced magic capable of manipulating molecules or even atoms to such a level they could regenerate the blade to a perfect state? Let me know your theories on the comments.
We will never know, so I focused instead on how to convey that high level of poorly understood “magic” through its appearance. I imagine that the craftsmanship level would be as precise as something produced today, and that the elves would find it very important to not alter the blade’s shape, because that would change the essence of the object and possibly ruin its magic in the process.
The hilt and scabbard’s design represent a common Gondorian style of the time, but subtly altered and “overgrown” by the elven style. My main goal here was to convey roots and vines and weeds with the language, very intertwined with the mannish style as a homage to the connection between the heirs of Elendil and Elrond’s folk.
Now I really feel tempted to draw the two other versions of this blade: Brand new in its dwarven glory, and broken and tattered as it was to Strider.
