Tiedot ennakkoon julkaistuista otteista ja sisältöä koskevista ennakkotiedoista eivät kirjan ilmestyttyä sovi oikein varsinaiseen artikkeliin; jääkööt tänne ihmeteltäviksi.--Tik (keskustelu) 15. syyskuuta 2021 kello 06.11 (UTC)

HarperCollins on myös julkaissut laajan näytteen teoksesta.[1]

Ennakkotietoja teoksen sisällöstä

Ennakkotietojen mukaan kirja, jota on myös nimitetty "kolmanneksitoista osaksi The History of Middle-earth -sarjassa", sisältää myös aiemmin julkaisemattomia Tolkienin tekstejä. Kirjoitusten teemat liittyvät mm. haltioiden kuolemattomuuteen, Númenoriin seutuihin ja eläimiin ja Gondoriin maantieteeseen, valarin olemukseen ja "jopa siihen, kenelle saattoi kasvaa parta".

HarperCollinsin apulaiskustannuspäällikön Chris Smithin mukaan kirja on "todellinen aarrearkku, joka tarjoaa lukijoille tilaisuuden kurkistaa professori Tolkienin olan yli juuri sillä hetkellä, kun hän tekee löytöjään; lisäksi jokaisella sivulla Keski-Maa tuodaan jälleen uskomattomalla tavalla eloon. Tolkienille Keski-Maa oli osa kokonaista tutkittavaa maailmaa, ja kirjoitukset The Nature of Middle-earth -teoksessa esittelevät matkoja, joille hän lähti koettaessaan ymmärtää paremmin ainutlaatuista luomustaan".[2]

Kirjan toimittaja Carl F. Hostetter (nimimerkki Ælfwine) on kertonut Tolkien Collector's Guiden keskustelualueella, että Christopher Tolkien lähetti hänelle valtaosan kirjaan tulevasta aineistosta ja ehti ennen poismenoaan antaa hänelle hyväksyntänsä tuottaa siitä kirja.[3] Hostetter on myös sanonut, että kaikki varmaan arvaavat, kenelle kirja on omistettu.[4] Hostetterin mukaan kirja sisältää jonkin verran erikoisjulkaisuissa [mikä tarkoittanee lähinnä Parma Eldalamberonia ja Vinyar Tengwaria] aiemmin ilmestynyttä alkuperäisaineistoa, mutta "suurin osa aineistosta on julkaisematonta".[5]

Tolkienistan haastattelussa heinäkuussa 2021[6] Hostetter kertoi vielä, että teos sisältää muun muassa aiemmin Vinyar Tengwarissa julkaistut tekstit Ósanwe-kenta,[7] Notes on Óre[8] ja The Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor[9] sekä Michaël Devaux'n vuonna 2014 La Feuille de la Compagnie -lehdessä julkaiseman sarjan Tolkienin myöhäisiä kirjoituksia haltioiden jälleensyntymisestä.[10]

Alkuteoksen sisällys

Google Booksissa julkaistiin elokuun 2021 alussa teoksen alusta laaja ote, johon kuuluvat copyright-sivu, sisällysluettelo, toimittajan esipuhe sekä ensimmäisen osan alku (kansi, sivut iv [copyright-sivu], vii-xxii, 1-27, 30-32, 43).[11] Kirjan ilmestyttyä sisällysluettelo on tarkistettu painetusta tekstistä:[12]
