Teoksen aloittaa tarinan ensimmäinen versio, Kadonneitten tarujen kirjan The Tale of Tinúviel,[3] tämän jälkeen seuraa otteita myöhemmistä versioista, sekä proosa- että runomuotoisista.[4] Teoksen kustantaja on HarperCollins ja se ilmestyi samanaikaisesti Yhdysvalloissa Houghton Mifflin Harcourtin kustantamana. Teoksen kuvituksesta vastaa Alan Lee.[2]
