What it looks like in the front line 50 yards from Regina trench
Soldiers in a trench. One man is looking through a periscope, towards the enemy lines. The other soldiers are leaning against the trench wall, having a rest. A close look at the surrounding area shows that it is littered with various objects including items of clothing and small metal cans. The entire area is bleak and barren, devastated by prolonged warfare.
The Canadians suffered heavy losses in the attempt to capture Regina trench, during the Battle of the Somme. On 11 November 1916, they finally managed to capture the trench, or at least what was left of it. After incessant shelling and fighting, all that remained was a shallow dip in the ground.
