Sisällysluettelo
Yleistä
Kahdeksas osa on suoraa jatkoa seitsemännelle: kirja jakautuu kolmeen osaan, joista ensimmäinen (otsikkona The Fall of Saruman, "Sarumanin tuho") käsittelee Tarun Sormusten herrasta kolmannen kirjan loppuosan lukuja "Helmin syvänteestä" lukuun "Palantír2 (s. 3-81). Toisessa osassa (otsikkona The Ring Goes East, "Sormus kulkee itään") seurataan Tarun Sormusten herrasta neljännen kirjan syntyvaiheita (s. 83-226) ja kolmannessa osassa (otsikkona Minas Tirith) viidennen kirjan muotoutumista (s. 227-439).
On syytä mainita erikseen kaksi lukua: Kolmannen osan ensimmäinen luku Addendum to 'The Treason of Isengard' (s. 229) sisältää Christopher Tolkienin myöhemmin löytämän käsikirjoitussivun tekstin, joka kuuluu edellisen osan luvussa XXV (The story foreseen from Fangorn[2]) esitellyn tarinahahmotelman jatkoksi.[3]
Kirjan viimeinen luku, The Second Map (s. 433-439) käsittelee Tolkienin toista työkarttaa, jota hän käytti kirjoittaessaan Tarun Sormusten herrasta viidettä kirjaa.
Kirjan nimestä
Nimi The War of the Ring on peräisin samasta lähteestä kuin edellisen osan nimi The Treason of Isengard: Tolkien ehdotti sitä Tarun Sormusten herrasta viidennen kirjan (osan Kuninkaan paluu ensimmäisen osan) nimeksi kirjeessään Rayner Unwinille 24. maaliskuuta 1953.[4] Christopher Tolkien on valinnut tämän nimen siksi, että viidennen kirjan kirjoittamisen historia vie lähes puolet sen sivuista. Tolkienin ehdotus neljännen kirjan nimeksi, The Ring Goes East[4] on päässyt tämän teoksen toisen osan otsikoksi.
